How to find out if there is a hidden leak at home

A high water bill with no change in the household routine is often a sign of a leak. Not every leak shows: the pipe may be broken inside a wall or under the floor.

The water meter test

Close every tap and don't use the toilet or the washing machine. Write down the meter reading, wait ten minutes and check again. If the number changed, water is escaping somewhere.

To know whether the problem is before or after the water tank, close the valve that feeds the tank and repeat the test.

Other signs

Damp patches, mold along the skirting, a swollen floor and the sound of running water with everything closed also point to a leak.

When to call a plumber

If the meter moved with everything closed, book a visit. With pressure tests, the technician finds the exact spot and opens only what is needed.
